Multiple People Shot, Undetonated Explosive Devices Found at Brooklyn Subway

Today's attack on a subway injured at least 16 people, including 10 shot by the gunman.

Five of the shooting victims remain in critical but stable condition.

At a press conference near the scene, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced the shooting is not being considered an act of .

The chaos began at 8:30 am (ET) on a Manhattan-bound N train when a lone assailant put on a gas mask, opened a smoke canister and began firing at fellow passengers.

Initial reports included a statement from the FDNY saying first responders found undetonated devices at the 36th Street station. However, the NYPD later said no active explosives were at the scene.

A search continues for the suspect, who authorities described as a heavy-set black man, approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall and last seen wearing a gray hoodie with a green construction vest.

Emergency responders swarmed a Brooklyn subway station this morning following reports of shots fired. According to multiple sources, at least five people were shot by a masked gunman at the 36th Street Station in Sunset Park.

officials told NBC New York that the suspect “dressed in clothing that resembles those worn by MTA workers, threw some device and opened fire.”

Multiple undetonated devices were found at the station.

Per NBC New York:

The NYPD warned New Yorkers to avoid the area and to expect emergency vehicles and delays. Power was shut off on the N/R Line from 59 Street to Atlantic Avenue and major delays were reported on the B, D, F, N, Q and R lines. W service is suspended.

Local schools were placed on lockdown, according to Democratic Councilwoman Alexa Aviles, who represents the area. No other information was immediately available.

Bystanders posted images of bloodied victims being tended to by their fellow passengers.

A manhunt is underway for the suspect, reportedly last seen wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest.

ATF agents have arrived on the scene to assist in the preliminary investigation. Agents will review shell casings to determine what kind of weapon the shooter used.

  1. We will probably never be told the truth but I wonder if any of these perpetrators just possibly entered our country illegally. Like people walking across the river and then being bused or flown all over the country without any one knowing where & when.
