After stepping off a private plane Wednesday, superstar rapper A$AP Rocky was met by officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who promptly arrested him.
Rocky, whose given name is Rakim Mayers, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport after vacationing in Barbados with his girlfriend, Rihanna.
Police say the rapper shot an acquaintance in the street during an argument in November 2021.
The victim claims Mayers approached him and that one round grazed his left hand.
Following Mayers’ arrest, authorities announced that they charged him with one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison, a $10,000 fine and mandatory probation.
Video footage showed a substantial police presence outside Mayers’ home earlier today. Officers reportedly smashed down the gate to his residence with a battering ram.
NBC News adds:
The shooting had not yet been reported in the media. In a statement on Twitter after publication of this article, the LAPD gave details of the November incident and said, “Early this morning, LAPD officers arrested Mayers for assault with a deadly weapon (firearm) at the Los Angeles International Airport. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.”
Representatives for A$AP Rocky and Rihanna did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Mayers and members of his entourage were detained for about one month by Swedish authorities in July 2019 after being arrested for aggravated assault. Then-President Trump demanded Sweden free the U.S. rapper.
At the time, some members of Trump’s inner circle were upset over their perception that the rapper wasn’t grateful for the president’s intervention.
