Redrawn New York Congressional Map Deals Heavy Blow to Democrats

-

A court-appointed special master has unveiled the latest proposed congressional map for .

The state's initial proposal, which Democrats rammed through without a single Republican vote would have halved the number of GOP-leaning seats statewide and guaranteed an overwhelming Democratic majority in the state's congressional delegation for the next decade.

It was so egregious that New York's highest court — with seven judges all appointed by Democratic governors — ruled that it violated the state's constitution.

The stunning reversal instantly erased Democratic gains in the nationwide process and made it less likely Nancy Pelosi would retain the Speaker's gavel. While the original map passed by New York Democrats would have resulted in 22 Democratic-leaning districts and only four Republican-leaning seats, the version unveiled today gives Republicans a genuine chance of winning 12 congressional districts.

RedState further reports:

Republicans were looking at a modest 1-3 seat gain via redistricting after Ron DeSantis worked his magic in Florida (there's a single district there under dispute, but nothing that can change the game). Now, you could be talking about a 5-8 seat gain just by virtue of the lines that have been drawn across the nation. Democrats who were celebrating a month ago at some earlier court victories have had their hopes of stemming the tide crushed.

One of the things the New York map fixed was an illegal gerrymander in New York City that diluted the voting power of Orthodox Jews, a demographic that leans heavily Republican. That's left Rep. Jerry Nadler, who would retire if he had any sense given his age and concerns, in the same district as another Democrat. Elsewhere, Republicans are set up to make headway in what should be a wave year for them.

In the end, the dynamics of the coming election don't change much, but if 2020 taught us anything, it's that every seat counts in future elections. Democrats went from a large majority to only holding the house by five seats in a single cycle. So while Republicans are going to gain a lot of seats this year, having more room for error in 2024 and 2026 could be the difference between keeping control and losing it.

Anyway, let the rage ensue. Democrats are already throwing a fit on social over the New York map, and there's a lot of crying left to do.

According to Politico, there are 170 “strong Biden” districts, 68 “competitive” districts and 157 “strong Trump” districts in the 46 states with finalized maps.

Besides New York, the redistricting process remains incomplete in Kansas, Missouri and New Hampshire.

  1. I’m sure her constituents won’t miss her. Hopefully someone will come in who can help the state of California, not push it further into a garbage dump.

    • No matter what happens in NY, unless the voters in California have a change heart, Nancy will continue to win her district. They get too many freebies from her so they want to keep her around. God help this country if we have the liberal democrats keep control of our government.

  2. Surprising that a Demonrat court overturned redistricting that was overseen/controlled by the most corrupt Attorney General in American history…Eric Holder.
