Political outsider, successful business leader and Republican nominee for governor Glenn Youngkin launched a digital ad campaign highlighting Terry McAuliffe repeatedly spreading COVID misinformation.
On at least three separate days — September 28, September 29 and October 7 — McAuliffe claimed there had recently been 8,000 cases in Virginia, a gross inflation that amounts to nearly three to four times the actual number of cases.

As the numbers from the Virginia Department of Health show, Virginia has never seen 8,000 confirmed cases in a day. Nine months ago, the 7-day moving average in Virginia peaked at 5,904 confirmed or probable cases. More recently, the 7-day moving average peaked at 3,706 on September 13, less than half the number stated by McAuliffe on multiple occasions.
On the days McAuliffe claimed there were 8,000 cases, the real totals were 2,916 cases, 2,711 cases and 2,084 cases.
On October 7, McAuliffe also claimed that “1,142 children are in ICU beds” due to COVID. This was nowhere close to the truth. According to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association dashboard, the number of people of all ages hospitalized in the ICU due to COVID on October 7 was 460. The vast majority of those cases were adults, not children.
“Terry McAuliffe's campaign is built on spreading lies and sowing fear,” said Youngkin campaign spokesperson Christian Martinez. “McAuliffe either has no clue what is going on with the pandemic, didn't bother to check or is happy to spread misinformation about COVID if he believes it will help him further his political career. Whatever the truth is, it's disqualifying.”

Glenn Youngkin chose to get the COVID vaccine and is the only candidate in the race who has aired a TV ad encouraging all Virginians to join him in choosing to get the COVID vaccine, which saves lives.
