Biden’s FDA Nominee Disregarded Dangers of Chemical Abortion

The ’s top nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration () is cardiologist Robert Califf. During the last stretch of Obama’s presidency, Califf served as the commissioner of the FDA for under a year.

Currently, Califf is an adjunct professor of medicine at Stanford and Duke University and he serves on the board of biopharmaceutical company Cytokinetics.

The latter raised concerns from Republicans and Democrats alike, who suggest his ties to the pharmaceutical company pose a conflict of interest. Senator Joe Manchin expressed distaste for Califf, saying, “I urge the administration to nominate an FDA commissioner that understands the gravity of the prescription drug epidemic and the role of the FDA in fighting back against the greed of the pharmaceutical industry.”

While Califf has received criticism from both sides of the political aisle, his stance and apathy toward the dangers of chemical abortions have largely gone unheard.

Under Califf’s direction in 2016, the FDA no longer required documentation of adverse medical events after chemical procedures. This rule was changed despite a 500% increase in emergency room visits after chemical abortions, since the early 2000s.

Chuck Donovan, president of the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Insitute, responded to this disregard. In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, Donovan said, “Dr. Califf did not address his role in that decision in his committee hearing. Instead, he told the committee that he trusted the FDA’s decision would be based on the best available data — data that is woefully inadequate due to his past actions as FDA commissioner.”

As Live Action explains, “A medical (or chemical) abortion is a non-surgical form of abortion in which the woman takes pills containing Mifepristone (RU-486) and Misoprostol (or Cytotec) to end the life of the baby.”

After taking the drugs, the pregnant woman experiences severe cramping, contractions and bleeding to expel her dead child, which she disposes of by flushing down the toilet. Symptoms, including bleeding, abdominal pain and nausea may continue for weeks. The procedure may lead to maternal death.

The FDA lifted regulations in support of the abortion industry’s latest ploy to mail abortion pills directly to women.
